Dr. Hatthaya Arunothayanan
An academy of learning.
“Our biotech provides the tools to our plant breeders to completely transform the breeding program,” Dr. Hattaya proudly explains. She goes on to say that “these tools improve data accuracy, time, and cost effectiveness so that breeders can produce new varieties for higher value in the markets. Plants with enhanced disease resistant genes and others pecial traits such as sex expression and skin color.”
Dr. Hattaya joined East-West Seed in 2011 after studying for her MS in Agriculture at the Kagawa University, and her Ph.D. in Plant Molecular Biology at Ehime University, both in Japan. Passionate about her work, she elaborates that “We are providing breeders with greater accuracy and assistance with plant selection. Our molecular markers hasten the breeding program to produce not just good seeds for our farmers, but to ensure we select the best genetic traits for true-to-type varieties. Traits which will convert into value for farmers to then improve their quality of life.”
For Dr. Hattaya, East-West Seed has been “an academy of learning. They invest such a lot in their people and Research and Development technology.” Qualities she doesn't believe can be found to such a degree in any other company in this field.
