East-West Seed’s journey in Mexico began over a decade ago, not with a major launch, but through quiet, steady development. Initial efforts focused on papaya, with support from the Guatemala team and partnerships with national distributors. These early activities laid the foundation for deeper market understanding and farmer engagement.
In 2018, three commercial papaya hybrids were introduced through a local breeding program led by Dr. Enrique Vazquez. The market response confirmed the potential for hybrid seed in Mexico’s diverse farming landscape.
A new phase of growth
A significant milestone came in 2024 with the establishment of East-West Seed Mexico as a legal entity. This move marked the start of a new chapter, defined by local operations, dedicated talent, and long-term investment in infrastructure and service. A local presence allows for faster decision-making, closer distributor support, and solutions better suited to Mexico’s unique agroecological conditions.
Focus areas and regional reach
East-West Seed Mexico currently has a strong footprint in central and southern Mexico, where climate and market conditions offer strong potential for high-value crops. The crop focus includes:
-
Papaya
-
Onion
-
Tomato
-
Hot pepper
-
Sweet corn
These crops align with East-West Seed’s strengths in genetics and smallholder-oriented solutions.
Serving farmers better
Recent efforts have focused on strengthening local capabilities, including trialing new varieties in experimental fields and introducing smaller seed packs to increase accessibility for smallholder farmers. These developments reflect a commitment to offering practical, affordable solutions tailored to farmers’ needs.
Looking forward
Mexico represents both a complex challenge and a strategic opportunity. With a growing local team, deeper market knowledge, and a focus on impact, East-West Seed is positioned to grow alongside Mexican farmers, supporting more resilient and productive farms for years to come.
Staying aligned with our mission
“At every step, our goal remains the same: to create positive impact in farmers’ lives through better seeds and practical support. Mexico is a complex market with enormous potential. With a clear focus, a growing team, and the right infrastructure in place, East-West Seed is ready to grow, alongside the farmers we serve.”
