Seeing innovation in the field is one of the most effective ways to understand its value. Recently, East-West Seed Mexico brought growers and partners together for a demo and training field day focused on papaya production, highlighting a new variety designed to meet evolving grower and market needs.
Real-world comparison in commercial fields
The event was hosted on a commercial papaya planting, where 9 hectares of a new variety, Red Sugar, were grown alongside 3 hectares of the widely cultivated Maradol variety. This side-by-side setup allowed participants to observe differences in plant development, fruit characteristics, and overall performance under local growing conditions.
A new option for papaya growers
In the field, Red Sugar papaya demonstrated strong uniformity, plant vigor, and fruit quality, reinforcing its potential as an attractive option for growers looking to diversify their papaya production beyond traditional varieties. Experiencing the crop in a real production environment helped growers assess how the variety could fit into their own farming systems.
Expertise that brings value
The field day was led by Dr Enrique Vazquez. His hands-on guidance and practical recommendations, grounded in extensive field experience, helped translate innovation into clear, actionable insights for growers.
Supporting growers beyond seeds
Field days like this reflect our commitment to supporting papaya growers beyond seeds, by providing technical knowledge, training, and on-the-ground support. Introducing new varieties through real-field demonstrations enables producers to make informed decisions with confidence.
With strong engagement from participants and positive feedback from the field, this initiative highlights how field-based innovation continues to shape the future of papaya production.
