3rd Gulay Festival Kicks off in San Ildefonso Bulacan

Bulacan Governor Willy Sy-Alvarado, Agriculture Assistant Secretary Salvador Salacup and San Ildefonso Mayor Carla Galvez-Tan led the opening of the 3rd Gulay Festival held today at Bulacan Agriculture State College Compound (BASC), San Ildefonso, Bulacan. The Festival is a weeklong cultural celebration that is aimed at promoting the development of the local vegetable industry in San Ildefonso and in the entire province.

The town of San Ildefonso is considered to be the vegetable basket of Bulacan producing best quality vegetables such as ampalaya, stringbeans, tomatoes, hot peppers, upo, patola and other lowland vegetables. Production of vegetables in this town steadily increased after the first Gulay Festival was launched in 2008 which was initiated by San Ildefonso Vegetable Growers Multi-Purpose Cooperative (SIVGMPC) then headed by Chairperson Desiree B. Duran.

Assistant Secretary Salvador Salacup lauded the hardwork and dedication of Bulacan farmers in improving their vegetable farming productivity. He also highlighted the current needs of the vegetable sector such as the need to bring down the cost of inputs, credit availability and facilitating market linkages. He lined up the support of the national government to address these issues. He also took note of the role of the private sector, such as the East-West Seed Company, for helping farmers improve their yield and income through their quality products and services. Ms. Daisy Duran attests that 90% of vegetables being produced in the province are using the quality hybrid varieties of East-West Seed such as Galaxy, Galactica ampalaya, D-Max tomatoes, Django and Red Hot hot peppers, Morena and Casino eggplants, Galante Stringbeans, Mayumi Upoand Primera Patola.

Among the activities slated at the 3rd Gulay Festival are , Vegetable Cooking Contest, Gulay “Pinaka” Contest, Booth Displays, Farmers Forum with Agriculture Secretary Proceso Alcala, Vegetable Production Training by East-West Seed, Organic Fertilizer Utilization by Durabloom, Farm Machinery and Drip Irrigation Seminar by Harbest Corporation, etc. On Jan 22, 2012, a ceremonial send off vegetable caravan will be held where vegetable harvests from San Ildefonso will be delivered to a new market center in Baliuag Farmers Trading Center located across SM Baliuag.
