Lamai Yapanan

Story

Turning plant breeding from a science into an art form.

Lamai firmly believes that “a plant breeder is both scientist and artist.” Our success is in combining the latest biotechnology and “imagination to produce the innovative varieties that serve our farmers and consumers so well at the market. Good varieties of quality seeds and fruit that are tolerant to disease,” Lamai tells us. A graduate of Maejo University’s Division of Vegetable Technology, East-West Seed was the first company she joined 23 years ago, and she is happy to have been here ever since! Lamai shares, “I’m so proud that I have been with East-West Seed since the beginning of my career, I’ve watched the company grow so fast!” “East-West Seed are now a big name in the vegetable market.”

Initially employed to join the bitter gourd and papaya plant breeding team (the bitter gourd being East-West Seed’s first hybrid superstar) Lamai was then asked to transfer her talents to the indigenous crop team. A new market that East-West Seed is entering. “A challenge,” she explains, “because there are over 50 different plants involved! Many varieties and many germplasms that are all different.” Their aim, Lamai reveals, is to make “selections and compare them to our competitors before launching new, better quality indigenous crops than are available on the market.”
