Dr. Conrado Balatero
We take an integrated breeding approach for developing new varieties.
Dr. Conrad’s journey began with East-West Seed in 2002, after 16 years with a plant-breeding institute under the Philippine government. While being interviewed by East-West Seed founders Simon Groot and Benito Domingo, he quickly realized that the philosophy of the company was all about enabling smallholder farmers—a philosophy Conrado still believes in wholeheartedly today. “It was truly inspiring for me,” he shares. Today, his dual roles are combining his close work with plant breeding teams while harnessing the latest in plant entomology, pathology, and biotechnology to “ensure we have an integrated breeding approach for developing new crop varieties.”
